The Heart of the Matter: Head Injuries
The headlines say it all: Camden Man Suffers Head Injury When Hit in a Parking Lot, New York Man Suffers Brain Injury When Hit by a Police Car, Pedestrian Suffers Head Injury After Fall. The words do not begin to describe the harrowing journey of those who suffer head and brain injuries after a traumatic accident.
According to the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, 9,000 people of all ages suffer brain injury each year in our state. Concussion is the most common brain injury and results when the brain, even though shielded by the skull, is injured by a blow to the head or when the head hits another object.
Our firm represents clients who suffer traumatic brain injury (TBI) in accidents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note the leading causes of TBI include:
- Vehicle accidents
- Struck-by accidents
The profile of brain injury has risen dramatically with the leveling of a class action lawsuit against the National Football League (NFL) by former players. Claiming the NFL was aware of the serious consequences, the players sought compensation for conditions that resulted from repetitive concussive hits to the head, including:
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)
In August, the NFL settled the class action without admitting fault by providing $765 million to players who can prove injury.
Few injuries alter the terrain of life as quickly and dramatically as a head injury. Whether injured in a slip and fall, a car collision, or an accident on a high school playing field, seek medical help and then speak with a personal injury attorney in New Jersey for legal advice.
